Character limits and sizes
| Placement | Headline | Body text | Max file |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feed: standard Pin ad (image) 2:3 1000 x 1500 | 40 to stay visible · 100 hard cap | 800 | 20 MB |
| Feed: video Pin ad 2:3 | 40 to stay visible · 100 hard cap | 800 | 2048 MB |
| Feed: collections ad 1:1 or 2:3 | 40 to stay visible · 100 hard cap | 800 | 20 MB |
Where two numbers are given, the first is what stays visible and the second is what the field accepts. They're different questions. Copy over the cap gets rejected at upload. Copy over the visible limit runs, and gets cut off. Most guides publish only one of the two.
Feed: standard Pin ad (image) — Headline
Pinterest calls this the Title. "Enter up to 100 characters. Depending on the device, the first 40 characters may show in people's feeds." So 40 is the number that has to carry the ad. For Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic and other double byte languages "only the first 30 characters will show".

The Description, and it is INVISIBLE to users. Pinterest: descriptions "do not appear when viewing the Pin in the home feed or search feed" and "do not appear for ads when viewed up close". Pinterest also says "Descriptions are used by our algorithm to determine relevance for delivery". Write it to be found, not to be read.
Feed: collections ad — Body text
Pinterest: "descriptions will not show up for promoted collections ads". Invisible here too.
The description nobody reads
The single most important thing about writing a Pinterest ad is that the description is not read by anyone. Pinterest states descriptions "do not appear when viewing the Pin in the home feed or search feed" and "do not appear for ads when viewed up close" — they exist to tell the ranking algorithm what the Pin is about. So persuasion belongs in the image and in the first 40 characters of the title; a description written as sales copy is invisible work. Write the description for retrieval, not for a reader. Testing description variants against each other is testing something no user will ever see.

Listed rather than omitted. A spec sheet with no gaps is either complete or hiding something, and from the outside those look identical.
Count these before you paste
AdPlaybook holds this spec as dated data and checks a finished campaign against it — character counts, audience floors, forbidden exclusions — before you paste anything into Pinterest Ads Manager. It is arithmetic, not a judgement call, so it runs on every campaign and costs nothing.
